Petroleum ether is the mix of light aliphatic hydrocarbons of pentane and hexane received from associated petroleum gases and light distillates of oil. Colorless liquid. Petroleum ether is used as solvent of fats, oils, pitches, etc. Fuel for petrol lighters and catalytic hot-water bottles. It is often used as eluent (solvent) in solution chromatography.

petroleum ether has no relation neither to simple, nor to esters.
